NMDC Limited has commissioned an integrated project connecting its iron ore operations at Bacheli in Chhattisgarh with its steel plant complex at Nagarnar.
The project comprises a new iron ore processing plant at Bacheli, a 135-km slurry pipeline with 15 mln tons per year capacity, and a 2 mln tons per year pellet plant at Nagarnar. The facilities are part of a INR 54.27bln (USD 566 mln) investment.
The slurry pipeline will transport processed iron ore concentrate from Bacheli to Nagarnar, providing an alternative to road transport and reducing reliance on railways. It passes through 61 villages in Bastar and Dantewada districts.
The pellet plant uses Straight Grate Induration technology to convert iron ore concentrate into pellets for steelmaking, allowing NMDC to utilize iron ore fines and slimes from its Bailadila mines more effectively and add a value-added product to its portfolio.
NMDC is India’s largest iron ore producer, operating the high-grade Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh and the Donimalai and Kumaraswamy mines in Karnataka. The company aims to increase its iron ore production capacity to 100 mln tons per annum by FY2031.
