Nippon Steel orders new EAF for Hirohata plant

Japan’s Nippon Steel has awarded Tenova a contract to supply a 110-ton Consteel electric arc furnace (EAF) for its Hirohata Works in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Daido Steel is acting as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

The new furnace will be the second Consteel EAF installed at Hirohata, following the commissioning of the first unit in 2022. It is designed to produce high-grade special steels, with a focus on improving operational flexibility and process efficiency.

The furnace will combine continuous scrap preheating with advanced automation systems to optimize energy consumption, melting performance and process stability. The technology is intended to support more efficient, lower-emission steel production.

The contract extends the cooperation between Tenova and Nippon Steel, which also includes a recently signed agreement for a 340-ton Consteel EAF at Nippon Steel’s Yawata Works.

Nippon Steel Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, is Japan’s largest steelmaker and the world’s third-largest steel producer. The company has consolidated global crude steel production capacity of around 76 mln tons per year, including 44 mln tons in Japan and 32 mln tons overseas, with a long-term target to expand capacity to 100 mln tons per year.
