7 Steel UK has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Heathrow Airport to support the airport’s planned expansion with UK-made steel, potentially strengthening demand for domestic steel production and supply chains.
The proposed expansion could require up to 400,000 tons of steel during construction, according to the UK government’s estimate. The MoU is expected to pave the way for a framework agreement and a longer-term supply contract, building on a relationship spanning more than 20 years. 7 Steel UK has supplied more than 150,000 tons of steel to Heathrow, including for the construction of Terminal 5.
Based in Cardiff, 7 Steel UK, formerly Celsa Steel UK, operates the UK’s largest electric arc furnace and produces steel using UK-sourced scrap. The company has capacity to produce up to 1.2 mln tons of crude steel annually.
