Baosteel commissions new EAF at Shanghai plant

Baosteel, a part of the Baowu Group, has launched operations at its new Danieli Zerobucket Ultra-High Power (UHP) electric arc furnace (EAF) in its Shanghai plant. Danieli provided a brand-new 150-ton UHP EAF featuring continuous charging and preheating of scrap, as well as continuous charging of hot metal from the slag door side, allowing for maximum production flexibility.

Danieli’s mechatronic technology packages meet Baosteel’s requirements for intelligent and unmanned operation. These include the Q-SmarTec dynamic electrode cooling system, Q-Robot automatic sampling, Q-ATS automatic tapping system (which includes the EBT automatic sanding device), and Q-Slag automatic slag detection, all designed to minimize operating costs and achieve automated steelmaking.

The project was executed on a tight schedule, taking only four and a half months from shutting down EAFs #7 and #8 to the hot start of the new EAF, Danieli said in a statement.
