ArcelorMittal Brazil has signed contracts for two solar energy projects totaling 465 MW, which will cover 14pct of its current electricity needs.
The first project, a 200 MW solar plant in Bahia, is a joint venture with Casa dos Ventos, building on their existing partnership for a 554 MW wind power project scheduled for late 2024. ArcelorMittal Brazil will hold a 55pct stake in this solar project, with Casa dos Ventos holding the remainder.
The second project is a 265 MW solar plant in Minas Gerais, developed in partnership with Atlas Renewable Energy. This project will be a 50/50 joint venture initially, with ArcelorMittal acquiring full ownership upon completion. Both projects are expected to be operational by the end of 2025 and are pending approval from Brazil’s antitrust authority, CADE. These initiatives are part of ArcelorMittal Brazil’s strategy to secure and decarbonize its electricity supply and move towards self-sufficiency in energy.
