Energy company Vattenfall and steel producer Salzgitter are advancing their goal of decarbonizing industrial production with a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This agreement ensures that fossil-free electricity from the Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm will be available for Salzgitter’s steel production starting in 2028.
Salzgitter AG CEO Gunnar Groebler stated, “Our SALCOS program is leading the steel industry in transforming towards low-CO2 production processes. This agreement with Vattenfall is a crucial step in securing green energy for our operations.”
The PPA will provide Salzgitter with 75 megawatts of power from Nordlicht 1, which is under development 85 kilometers north of Borkum and expected to be operational in 2028. Salzgitter will purchase approximately 300 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power about 120,000 households.
