Tata Steel Nederland has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Swedens Lindab to supply Zeremis green steel once the IJmuiden steel mill transitions to hydrogen-based production.
Lindab, a company specializing in sustainable ventilation systems, recognizes that steel is responsible for approximately 80pct to 95pct of the environmental impact of its products and around 50pct of its total emissions.
The move toward green, recycled steel represents a significant transformation for Tata Steel Nederland, aimed at greatly reducing CO2 emissions. The new production will utilize Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) technology, initially powered by natural gas, and will later shift to hydrogen as it becomes more accessible and cost-effective. This transition requires substantial investment and changes to the production process. Tata Steel aims to achieve a 30pct to 40pct reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, with a long-term goal of producing fully carbon-neutral steel by 2045.
