Stegra to implement advanced water management solution for green steel plant in Boden

Aquatech has announced a groundbreaking project to deliver a comprehensive water management solution for Stegra’s (formerly H2 Green Steel) flagship green steel plant in Boden, Sweden.

The Private to Private Partnership with Stegra and John Laing involves designing, building, financing, operating, and maintaining critical infrastructure for the world’s first large-scale green steel plant.

Aquatech will supply and operate the plant, while John Laing provides financing, allowing Stegra to focus on its integrated green hydrogen, iron, and steel production. The “water island” solution covers ultra-pure water treatment, wastewater recycling, zero liquid discharge, and water for cooling systems, ensuring efficient water management.

Stegra, founded in 2020 to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries, is building this flagship plant to produce steel with up to 95pct lower CO2 emissions than traditional coke-fired blast furnaces. The plant is set to begin producing near-zero-emission steel by 2026.

Through a 25-year service contract, Aquatech will ensure the ongoing operation and performance of its systems, providing reliable, long-term support to Stegra’s operations. Stegra, renamed in 2024, is building its first large-scale green hydrogen, iron, and steel plant in Boden, Sweden, with headquarters in Stockholm.
