Nucor Steel in Alabama has contracted SMS group to modernize and expand its Steckel mill at the Tuscaloosa site. The project’s centerpiece involves transforming the existing mill into an advanced tandem Steckel mill. This upgrade will include an additional high-performance mill stand installed downstream of the existing stand, allowing simultaneous use for roughing and finishing passes. The new configuration also permits the use of special work rolls for manufacturing base and checkered plates.
The existing entry and exit Steckel furnaces will be replaced with advanced, closed-type furnaces designed to maintain optimal product temperatures and minimize heat radiation, leading to reduced natural gas consumption.
After the revamp, both mill stands will feature CVC plus technology for enhanced strip quality, employing a combination of bending and axial shifting of work rolls to control strip profile and flatness. A looper will optimize strip tension and assist with speed control.
As the systems supplier, SMS group will modernize the electrical and automation systems, including drives, sensors, and process automation. The modularized level 1 software architecture ensures rapid response to requirements and reliable performance, utilizing SMS group’s X-Pact Centerline Control system for improved rolling stability. The existing mill stand will be upgraded with a new twin drive for independent operation of the work rolls. SMS group’s Genius CM system will continuously monitor the drive unit, enabling condition-based maintenance.
The automation system will undergo a Plug & Work integration test before shipping to facilitate quick commissioning. This conversion will significantly enhance Nucor Steel’s production capacity, positioning the company to tackle future challenges in the steel industry.
