Evonith Steel recommissions blast furnace at Wardha plant

Nithia Capital and Evonith Steel have announced the successful recommissioning of Blast Furnace 1 (BF1) at Evonith Steel City in Wardha, near Nagpur, Maharashtra, according to a company press release.

BF1 is a 450 m3 blast furnace with a production capacity of 550,000 tons of hot metal per year. Together with Blast Furnace 2 (BF2), which has a capacity of over 700,000 tons per year, Evonith Steel’s total hot metal capacity now reaches 1.3 mln tons. This production will primarily support the steelmaking needs of Evonith Value Steel Limited (EVSL) and supply both steel grade and foundry grade pig iron to downstream steelmakers.

Since acquiring Evonith Steel in December 2020, Nithia has consistently invested in enhancing the facility’s sustainability, efficiency, and environmental compliance. This has included various capital expenditure projects such as the installation of BF2, upgrades to the raw material handling system, and increasing the sinter plant capacity to over 1.5 mln tons to support the blast furnaces. Additionally, dust emission collection systems have been implemented in the ironmaking and steelmaking areas.

Founded in 2010, Nithia Capital is a global investment and advisory firm focused on revitalizing underperforming, asset-backed industries in steel, power, resources, and related sectors. Evonith Metallics Limited (EML) and Evonith Value Steel Limited (EVSL), formerly known as Uttam Galva Metallics and Uttam Value Steel, together form the integrated steel complex at Evonith Steel City. The facility currently has an annual installed capacity of up to 1 mln tons of crude steel. EML produces pig iron for EVSL and third-party manufacturers, while EVSL uses hot metal to produce flat steel products, including HRC, CRC, and galvanized steel.
