SAIL Bokaro modernizes finishing mill with advanced automation solutions

Primetals Technologies has upgraded the automation systems at the finishing mill of SAIL Bokaro’s hot-strip mill in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, India, completing the project 26 months after starting, one month ahead of schedule.

The upgrade, featuring advanced Level 1 and Level 2 automation solutions, enhances quality, reliability, and efficiency for SAIL Bokaro, a key player in India’s steel industry.

The project involved replacing outdated automation hardware with cutting-edge systems, including process automation, flatness and thickness gauges, and a fully virtualized server infrastructure. It also included the adaptation and upgrade of drive interfaces, new software implementation, and the renewal of measurement technology for profile and flatness.

The project was completed two days ahead of the planned 20-day shutdown, thanks to meticulous planning and strong collaboration between Primetals Technologies and SAIL teams. All mill performance targets were also met ahead of schedule.

Modernization covered automation for the finishing mill, cooling section, down coiler, and coil conveyor, with key upgrades including new sensors and valve stands for hydraulic adjustments.

The upgraded system provides several benefits, including increased availability, improved technology, and enhanced functionality. The new human-machine interface (HMI) and diagnostic system support operators with faster troubleshooting, reducing downtime at the finishing mill. The virtualized servers ensure smooth operation and better production quality.

SAIL Bokaro, part of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is one of India’s largest steel plants, producing flat products such as HRC, CRC, and galvanized steel, serving industries like automotive, LPG cylinder production, and pipe manufacturing.
