British Steel, the UK’s sole rail manufacturer, has opened a GBP 10-mln (USD 12.6 mln) rail stocking facility, the largest of its kind in the country.
Located at its headquarters in Scunthorpe, where most UK rail is produced, the facility is part of British Steel’s strategy to support Network Rail by ensuring ready stock for its supply chain.
The dedicated hub provides a central location for safely handling, storing, and loading rail stock. All rails are rigorously tested to meet quality standards, allowing for immediate dispatch or welding into 216m lengths. The facility is equipped with 11 multi-gantry hoists for lifting finished rail stock to customer rolling stock, which is then transported for installation on UK mainline routes.
When fully stocked, the facility will hold around 25,000 tons of 108m finished rail, mainly 56E1 and 60E2 sections.
