SSAB has signed an agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide fossil-free steel for AWS’s new data centers in Sweden. The collaboration includes pilot deliveries of HYBRIT technology-based steel, a groundbreaking method developed by SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall, which replaces coking coal with hydrogen produced from fossil-free electricity, emitting only water vapor.
Ruukki, a SSAB subsidiary, will supply roof and wall structures for the data centers, including sandwich panels made with HYBRIT steel for the facility in Vasteras. AWS, aiming to reduce carbon emissions, primarily uses steel from recycled scrap but has partnered with SSAB and Ruukki to access virgin steel produced sustainably.
The initiative supports AWS’s commitment to lower emissions while showcasing SSAB’s innovative approach to decarbonizing the steel industry.
