Egypt’s Ezz Steel announced that a transformer at Meltshop No. 2 of its subsidiary, Ezz Flat Steel Company in Suez, has suffered a significant malfunction, according to the company’s stock exchange filing.
The manufacturer was immediately contacted, and an initial technical evaluation estimates that repairs will take approximately nine months. The insurance provider has also been informed, and operations at Meltshop No. 2 have been suspended as a result, the company said.
To mitigate the impact, Ezz Flat Steel will use Meltshop No. 1 to alternate between casting slabs for flat steel production and billets for rebar manufacturing, depending on market demand.
Ezz Steel operates four fully integrated steelmaking plants in Egypt with a combined production capacity of 7 mln tons of flat and long steel products annually.
