Turkey’s scrap import prices rose further this week, but the increase dampened buying interest from local steel mills due to weak demand for finished steel. Scrap prices were assessed at USD 350-360 per ton CFR, up from USD 345-355 per ton CFR last week.
The upward trend in scrap prices is driven by lower scrap collection during the winter and the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s blanket tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which have pushed up prices for U.S.-origin scrap.
However, weak sales of Turkish steel products and the availability of competitively priced billets from both domestic and overseas suppliers, particularly from Malaysia, could limit further scrap price gains in the near term.
Despite rising scrap costs, Turkish steel mills have been unable to raise finished steel prices due to sluggish demand. Long steel export prices remained stable over the past week, with rebar offers at USD 560-570 per ton FOB and wire rod offers at USD 575-585 per ton FOB.
