SSAB and EMW partner on fossil-free steel supply

SSAB and EMW Steel Service Centre have entered a long-term partnership for the supply of fossil-free steel, supporting EMW’s goal to further reduce its carbon footprint. Low-emission steel is already central to EMW’s business strategy.

EMW, part of Germany’s family-owned SCHAFER WERKE Group, is one of Europe’s largest independent steel service centres, supplying coils, slit strips, cut-to-size formats, and circular blanks, especially to the automotive and steel processing industries.

The agreement builds on a longstanding collaboration between SSAB and EMW, covering areas from sales and production to testing and customer engagement, serving as a model of inter-company cooperation in sustainable steelmaking.

Traditional steel production is a major CO2 emitter. SSAB aims to transform the industry by offering fossil-free steel using hydrogen-based HYBRIT technology, which replaces carbon emissions with water as a by-product. SSAB produced the world’s first fossil-free steel in 2021 and has since made pilot deliveries across several industries.

When commercialized, SSAB’s fossil-free steel will have targeted carbon emissions of less than 0.05 kg CO2/kg steel across Scopes 1, 2, and upstream Scope 3.
