SAIL commissions new hot-blast stove at Rourkela Steel Plant

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has awarded Primetals Technologies a contract to supply a fourth hot-blast stove for Blast Furnace No. 5 at its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). This second order from SAIL further strengthens Primetals’ position as a leading provider of hot-blast stove technology.

The new internal-combustion-chamber stove will enable RSP to conduct sequential repairs on existing units without disrupting production. Delivered as a turnkey project, Primetals will handle design, engineering, equipment supply, construction, and commissioning. The package includes the stove shell, refractories, electrical and automation systems, and a Level 1 automation upgrade.

The stove features an enhanced dome design for better thermal expansion control and a proprietary burner for a more stable flame. Commissioning is scheduled for mid-2026 and is expected to improve operational flexibility and efficiency at the plant.

RSP, India’s state-owned integrated steel mill, has grown from an initial 1 mln tons of capacity in 1959 to 4.5 mln tons of hot metal annually. It produces a wide range of products including plate, coil, silicon steel, and pipe.
