Ministry eyes local automotive steel production to boost industrial base

Egypt’s Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, met with leading steel producers to advance plans for localizing automotive steel, a key part of the country’s broader strategy to deepen local manufacturing and reduce import reliance.

According to local reports, Kandil Steel and Ashry Steel have been tasked with preparing a feasibility study on domestic automotive steel production. The move aims to strengthen supply chains and support feeder industries, particularly for the automotive sector.

Al-Wazir reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the steel industry, citing its vital role in sustaining national industries. He noted that local production of automotive-grade steel is a top priority, as it would cut costs, raise local content, and improve the competitiveness of Egyptian products.

The government is also working on a two-pillar strategy: establishing a sustainable legislative and incentive framework and identifying vehicle components that can be locally produced with skilled labor and clear timelines.
