ISPC adopts geothermal cooling to cut emissions and boost efficiency

Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittefaq Steel Products Company (ISPC) has partnered with Strataphy to introduce geothermal-powered Cooling as a Service (CAS) at its facilities, the first application of advanced geothermal cooling in the region’s steel sector. The initiative aims to cut carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency in one of the most energy-intensive industries.

ISPC executives said the move represents a significant step toward reducing the company’s CO2 footprint by adopting technology that manages thermal loads more efficiently, lowers operating costs, and supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 sustainability goals. They noted that Strataphy’s system meets the steel industry’s demanding cooling needs while delivering substantial savings in energy, water, and chemicals.

Strataphy’s PrimeLoop system, combined with its Smart IoT GeoExchange technology, harnesses subsurface temperatures to provide continuous cooling with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) above 5, more than double that of conventional HVAC systems. Offered under a CAS model, the service eliminates upfront capital costs while ensuring predictable operational expenses and measurable environmental benefits.

Strataphy highlighted that shifting geothermal cooling from a capital to an operating expense model allows for competitive costs, predictable revenues, and a smaller environmental footprint. The technology also offers industrial-grade reliability, delivering round-the-clock high-efficiency cooling with up to 50pct less electricity use and a 30pct smaller surface footprint.

The system is expected to cut thousands of tons of CO2 emissions each year at ISPC’s facilities, equivalent to removing more than 10,000 cars from the road, demonstrating geothermal cooling’s potential to accelerate decarbonization in heavy industry.

Founded in 1989 and headquartered in Dammam, ISPC is the largest private steel manufacturer in the Middle East, producing billets, rebars, and structural sections for domestic and global markets.
