Ministry grants BIS licence exemptions to 202 foreign steel firms

India’s Ministry of Steel has eased steel import procedures by exempting 202 Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licenses from mandatory compliance requirements on the Steel Import Monitoring System (SIMS) portal, according to the local media reports.

The exemptions apply to manufacturers from 16 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, and the US, Japan leading with over 80 licenses, followed by South Korea with more than 50.

Around 72 foreign integrated steel mills holding these licenses will benefit, enabling uninterrupted supply to Indian producers, the reports said.

The move is aimed at streamlining imports for Integrated Steel Plants (ISPs) and foreign suppliers, removing certain raw material compliance requirements to reduce procedural delays.
