Jindal Steel upgrades plate mill automation at Angul plant

India’s Jindal Steel has commissioned Primetals Technologies to upgrade the Level 1 and 2 automation systems at its 5-meter plate mill in Angul, Odisha. The project aims to boost system availability, reduce downtime, and secure a stable supply of spare parts.

The upgrade will replace outdated hardware, migrate existing application software, and introduce the advanced SIMATIC S7-1500 control system with the latest WinCC software via the Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) portal, the first installation of its kind at a plate mill of this size in India. All servers will be fully virtualized to simplify lifecycle management and enable future system upgrades.

With an annual capacity of 1.2 mln tons, the Angul plate mill produces plates from 5 to 350 mm thick and 900 to 4,800 mm wide. Key human-machine interface functions will be retained, ensuring operators are familiar with the system and allowing a shorter ramp-up to full production.

Jindal Steel said the outdated automation system had been a major cause of unplanned downtime. The new platform is expected to improve production stability and facilitate seamless integration of future software packages.

Jindal Steel is one of India’s leading industrial groups with a strong presence in steel, mining, and infrastructure. The company currently operates with an annual steel production capacity of 9.6 mln tons and a captive power capacity of 1,634 MW.
