EMSTEEL, one of the region’s largest publicly listed steel and building materials producers, has delivered hydrogen-based rebar for the construction of Abu Dhabi’s first net-zero carbon mosque in Sustainable City, Yas Island.
The project marks a regional first, with Aldar becoming the inaugural developer in MENA to use low-emissions hydrogen-based steel. The rebar was produced using hydrogen from EMSTEEL’s green hydrogen pilot project, developed in partnership with Masdar last year. The material will play a key role in enabling the mosque to achieve LEED Zero Carbon certification, a milestone in sustainable architecture for the capital.
The company stated that the delivery underscores its commitment to industrial sustainability and the UAE’s low-carbon transition. It noted that, together with Aldar, it is setting a precedent for wider adoption of green steel across future residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects.
Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL has a production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement annually. The group exports to over 70 markets, accounting for 30pct of its sales. The company offers a diverse range of steel products, including wire rod, rebar, heavy sections, and sheet piles.
