ArcelorMittal sues Liberty Steel over unpaid billet purchases

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada has filed a USD 2.7 mln lawsuit in federal court in Peoria, Illinois, against Liberty Steel & Wire, alleging non-payment for billet shipments to Liberty’s Georgetown, South Carolina facility.

According to the filing, Liberty breached a September 2023 supply agreement by failing to pay for the billets and improperly disposing of consigned materials while demolishing the Georgetown plant. The suit, filed by law firm Clark Hill, seeks USD 2.7 mln in damages plus 12pct annual interest for breach of contract, conversion, and unjust enrichment.

Liberty Steel Georgetown has faced mounting legal troubles, including lawsuits from industrial gas supplier Linde and utility Santee Cooper over unpaid bills. The Georgetown mill, which shut down last year, after years of financial struggles and failed restart attempts, has changed hands multiple times since opening in 1969. Liberty acquired it in 2017 but has been hit by financial strain following the Greensill Capital collapse.
