MSSSL to build new greenfield steel plant in Karnataka

Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited (MSSSL), a joint venture between India’s Bajaj Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, will set up a greenfield integrated steelmaking facility in Kanakapura, Koppal, Karnataka. The project will raise MSSSL’s annual production capacity to 700,000 tons, further strengthening its position among India’s top special steel producers.

The new plant, expected to start operations by early 2028, will include iron-making, steelmaking, and a blooming mill with a capacity of 0.35 mln tons per year. The investment will incorporate advanced technologies such as a jumbo bloom caster, modern rolling mills, and digital inspection systems to produce critical grades for powertrains, railways, and bearings.

Aligned with its net-zero 2050 goal, MSSSL plans to integrate hydrogen-ready infrastructure and carbon capture technologies in future phases. The expansion underscores the company’s strategy to meet rising demand while ensuring flexibility, automation, and energy efficiency.

MSSSL, a joint venture between Jamnalal Sons (Bajaj Group) and Sumitomo Corporation, is a leading supplier of over 400 grades of high-performance steels for automotive and engineering applications, including transmission parts, engine components, suspension systems, fasteners, bearings, and fuel injection systems.
