Saarstahl partners with Deutsche Bahn on green steel pilot for rail sector

Saarstahl has partnered with Deutsche Bahn (DB) to launch a pilot project for the use of green steel in rail infrastructure, marking a key step toward sustainable supply chains and a circular economy in the rail industry.

The green steel, produced at Saarstahl Ascoval in France, is manufactured using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology that melts scrap and old rails instead of relying on iron ore and coal. This process cuts CO2 emissions by up to 70pct compared with conventional blast furnace production, saving around 1,800 tons of CO2 for every 1,000 tons of green steel produced.

Deutsche Bahn, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, is focusing its sustainability strategy on five areas: climate protection, resilience, resource conservation, environmental protection, and noise reduction. With nearly half of its Scope 3 emissions stemming from construction, DB is testing low-emission materials such as green steel and green concrete to decarbonize its infrastructure projects.

Based in Hayange, France, Saarstahl Rail, a subsidiary of the Saarstahl Group, produces CO2-reduced steel rails in over 100 profiles and 25 steel grades, with lengths up to 108 meters.
