Marcegaglia implements digital solution at Ravenna plant to boosts efficiency

Italy’s Marcegaglia’s Ravenna plant has witnessed remarkable results with SmartLine, an automatic strip processing line control system based on predictive modeling.

Developed by Fives, an international industrial engineering group, in collaboration with Marcegaglia, a renowned carbon and stainless steel producer, SmartLine was implemented at the Ravenna plant in Italy.

The plant faced challenges with diverse upstream processes and a growing demand for high value-added steel grades, necessitating a smart solution to optimize quality yield and productivity.

SmartLine is a cutting-edge digital solution that leverages predictive models and process knowledge to optimize operations in the strip processing line. Operating in automatic mode, it analyzes incoming coil data, predicts setpoints for specific properties, and adjusts process parameters for each coil. This ensures that every coil is produced with utmost precision and efficiency, from start to finish.

“With the SmartLine we obtained a reduction of the cost of production of the OPEX, in particular of the gas consumption by 10pc, we increased the productivity of 5pc and obtained a very high stability of the process,” says Aldo Fiorini, Plant Manager of Marcegaglia Ravenna and COO of Carbon Steel Flat at Marcegaglia.
