Thyssenkrupp upgrades automation systems at hot strip mill in Duisburg

Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe has completed a major modernization of the automation systems in the coiler area of hot strip mill No. 1 at its Duisburg site, following an upgrade carried out by SMS group.

The mill, originally supplied by SMS, is a core asset in Thyssenkrupp’s flat steel portfolio and produces a wide range of carbon steel grades. The latest project focused on renewing Level 1 automation and human-machine interface (HMI) systems for the three downcoilers, replacing obsolete hardware and legacy software to improve reliability and digital readiness.

The upgrade included implementation of a new technological control system and enhanced HMIs, optimizing downcoiler performance and operator interaction. Central to the modernization was the integration of SMS group’s X-Pact ProBAS platform with X-Pact Embedded controllers, supported by an EtherCAT real-time network for high-speed sensors and a PROFIBUS remote I/O system for standard instrumentation.

Thyssenkrupp said the measures improve plant availability and establish a robust foundation for future digitalization initiatives at the Duisburg facility.
