Alter Steel has selected Danieli to supply technology and equipment for its new steelmaking facility in Pinkenba, Queensland, Australia. The plant will employ Danieli MIDA QLP – Quality Long Product – technology, incorporating the Digimelter and Q-One power feeder to enable sustainable electric steelmaking.
The facility, scheduled for completion in late 2027, will produce 500,000 tons per year of high-quality reinforcing bar, wire rod, hot-rolled mesh, spooled coil, and bar, all from a single site. The Digimelter is fully compatible with renewable energy and is designed to reduce CO2 emissions to 0.37 tons per ton of steel, an 80pct reduction compared with traditional blast furnaces.
The MIDA QLP endless casting-rolling process eliminates billet reheating, cutting energy use by up to 75pct versus conventional mills. Finished products are delivered in precision-aligned, tangle-free bundles within two hours, optimizing downstream processing.
The new facility will use 100pct Australian scrap and support local demand for construction-grade steel, marking the first greenfield steel mill built in Australia in over 40 years.
