AM/NS India commissions advanced galvanising line to boost automotive steel supply

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has commissioned a new state-of-the-art Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) at its flagship Hazira plant in Gujarat, the company announced.

The new facility makes AM/NS India the only steelmaker in the country capable of producing Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) with tensile strengths up to 1180 MPa, crucial for the automotive sector’s evolving needs around safety, durability, and lightweighting.

Equipped with advanced technologies from parent companies ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, the CGL will produce galvanised and galvannealed coated flat steel, including licensed products from both firms. These high-performance steels offer recyclability, formability, and improved fuel efficiency, key for meeting India’s Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) Phase III norms effective from April 2027.

The line also integrates modern environmental technologies to significantly reduce CO2 intensity, including waste heat recovery, thermal energy control, regenerative drives, and the use of electrolytic hydrogen, aligning with AM/NS India’s green steel commitments.

This commissioning forms part of AM/NS India’s broader expansion strategy, which aims to increase production capacity from 9 mln tons per annum to 15 mln tons per annum at Hazira, with a longer-term goal of reaching 24 mln tons per annum. The project includes both upstream and downstream enhancements.

Separately, the company is progressing on plans to build an integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh, where land acquisition is underway, and is also planning similar facilities in Odisha. AM/NS India, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is a leading flat carbon steel producer in India with a crude steel capacity of 9 mln tons per annum and a pellet production capacity of 20 mln tons per annum.
