ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) has partnered with the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) to explore the use of iron ore tailings in road construction, aiming to convert mining waste into sustainable infrastructure materials.
Under the agreement, CSIR-CRRI will conduct laboratory testing, material characterization and pavement design studies to assess the suitability of iron ore tailings for use in different road layers. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on natural aggregates and soil, while addressing the environmental challenge of tailings disposal.
India generates around 18-20 mln tons of iron ore tailings annually, mainly from beneficiation plants in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, where the waste is typically stored in tailings dams.
The collaboration will also involve scientific validation and potential field demonstrations, supporting circular economy practices and the development of green infrastructure in the country.
AMNS India, a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is a leading integrated flat carbon steel producer in India. The company operates with a crude steel capacity of 9 mln tons per annum, along with 20 mln tons of pellet capacity and a diverse portfolio of flat and value-added steel products.
