ArcelorMittal starts electrical steel production at Mardyck

ArcelorMittal has produced the first industrial coil at its new electrical steel line at the Mardyck site in France, marking the start of operations.

The first coil, weighing over 17 tons, was produced on the initial three lines, including preparation, annealing-coating and slitting. The milestone will allow further optimization of processes ahead of a gradual ramp-up to full capacity.

The new facility is part of a strategic project to expand ArcelorMittal’s electrical steel production, which is used in electric motors, generators and renewable energy applications.

Once fully operational, the Mardyck line, together with the existing Saint-Chely-d’Apcher plant, will increase the group’s electrical steel capacity in Europe to around 295,000 tons per year.

The company said full ramp-up will take several months as it prepares for initial deliveries and stabilizes operations.

ArcelorMittal Mardyck, located near Dunkirk in northern France, is a major finishing site within the ArcelorMittal France North cluster. Traditionally a specialist in high-end automotive coatings, the site has recently undergone a into a primary European hub for electrical steel products.
