ArcelorMittal has announced plans to build an advanced non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NOES) manufacturing facility in Alabama. The plant, fully owned by ArcelorMittal, will have an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 tons, depending on the product mix. It will support key sectors such as automotive and mobility, renewable energy, and industrial applications, including electric motors and generators.
The project aims to strengthen U.S. manufacturing competitiveness by expanding domestic NOES production and reducing reliance on imports. Construction is set to begin in the second half of 2025, with production expected to start in 2027. The facility is projected to create up to 1,300 jobs during construction and over 200 permanent positions for ongoing operations.
NOES is a critical material for electric motors used in battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and various energy technologies. Its production requires advanced technical expertise, precision manufacturing, and strict quality control to meet stringent performance specifications.
The new ArcelorMittal Calvert plant will include an annealing pickling line, cold-rolling mill, annealing coating line, packaging and slitter line, and other specialized equipment for electrical steel manufacturing. The facility will be located near AM/NS Calvert, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. AM/NS Calvert features a river terminal, hot strip mill, cold rolling mill, hot dip galvanizing lines, rail yard, and an electric arc furnace (EAF) nearing completion.
ArcelorMittal Calvert is a wholly owned subsidiary of ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s leading steel and mining companies. The company operates in 60 countries, with primary steelmaking facilities in 15 nations. In 2024, ArcelorMittal reported revenues of USD 62.4 bln, crude steel production of 57.9 mln tons, and iron ore production of 42.4 mln tons.
