Egypt’s Misr National Steel (Ataqa) has applied to the General Authority for Industrial Development for a license to build a billet production facility, the company said in a stock exchange filing.
Ataqa submitted its financial bid on August 10, following the authority’s approval of its technical proposal, which qualified it to participate in the bidding process. The planned project would produce continuous steel billets with an annual capacity of 1.5 mln tons.
The move aligns with the Egyptian government’s strategy to localize steel manufacturing by issuing new billet production licenses.
Ataqa currently operates with an annual rebar capacity of 780,000 tons.
