Baosteel has completed a major gearbox overhaul on its 2050-millimeter hot strip mill in Shanghai with support from SMS group, marking a key milestone in its 2025 maintenance program.
The work, carried out during the mill’s planned annual shutdown, included measurement and adjustment of gearboxes on both sides of the slab sizing press, disassembly, inspections, and bearing replacements. The project was completed without additional downtime, reflecting SMS group’s efficient execution.
As one of the most critical tasks in Baosteel’s maintenance campaign, the overhaul also provided valuable condition data through detailed checks such as housing deformation analysis, gear flank testing, and dynamic balance verification of synchronizing shafts.
Commissioned in 1989 with SMS equipment and upgraded with a slab sizing press in 2013, Baosteel’s 2050-millimeter hot rolling line has long been a cornerstone of China’s steel industry. Originally designed for 4 mln tons of annual output, the line has consistently exceeded targets, surpassing 5 mln tons per year and at times reaching 6 mln.
