BHP posts record iron ore output in FY25 despite weather disruptions

BHP Group reported record iron ore production for FY2025, ending June 30, overcoming disruptions from Tropical Cyclone Zelia and Tropical Storm Sean. The ahead-of-schedule ramp-up of the second concentrator at Samarco also supported the strong performance.

The miner produced 290 mln tons of iron ore during the year, reaching the upper end of its guidance range of 282-294 mln tons. Its Western Australia operations set several records, including full-year output. South Flank exceeded nameplate capacity in its first full year, while continued investment in rail, port, and technology infrastructure boosted overall efficiency.

Fourth-quarter iron ore output rose 1pct YoY to 77.5 mln tons.

BHP’s steelmaking coal production rose 5pct, with improved truck productivity offsetting weather-related and geotechnical challenges at the Broadmeadow mine.

The company noted that global commodity demand remained resilient in 2025, supported by Chinas strong export performance, solid domestic demand, and increased investment in renewables, grid infrastructure, machinery, and electric vehicles. While headwinds from slower growth and trade fragmentation persist, stimulus measures in China and the U.S. are expected to cushion near-term impacts.

BHP expects FY2026 iron ore production to range between 284-296 mln tons.
