British Steel starts rail delivery for Mersin-Adana-Gaziantep railway project

The first shipment in a major rail contract is set to leave British Steel for Turkey this week. The company is supplying tens of thousands of tons of track for the project, which connects Mersin with the cities of Adana, Osmaniye, and Gaziantep in southern Turkey, British Steel announced in a press release.

This project aims to create a lower-emission transport link between Turkey’s second-largest container port and inland cities over 150 miles away. It is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 150,000 tons annually.

A team from Ronesans Holding, which is constructing the Mersin-Adana-Gaziantep High-Speed Railway on behalf of the Turkish Ministry of Transport, recently visited British Steel’s Scunthorpe operations for factory acceptance testing. Following the success of this visit, the first part of the order will depart from Goole to Turkey in the coming days.

The rails being shipped are 60E1 in grade R260, each measuring 36 meters in length, British Steel said.
