BYD and Hubco partner to launch electric vehicle assembly plant in Karachi

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD announced plans to open a car production plant in Pakistan, partnering with Mega Motors to sell three models. The company will establish three flagship stores and experience centers in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, aiming to launch two SUV models and a sedan in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Mega Motors, a subsidiary of Pakistan’s largest private utility, Hub Power Co Ltd. (Hubco), will lead the project. Hubco CEO Kamran Kamal stated that the plant, to be built near Port Qasim in Karachi, with production slated to start in 2026. Port Qasim, home to assembly plants for Toyota, Suzuki, and Kia, is Pakistan’s second-largest port, handling 35pct of the country’s cargo. Additionally, Hubco plans to establish fast-charging stations across major cities, motorways, and highways to support the country’s growing charging infrastructure.
