Cogne Acciai Speciali has awarded Danieli Service a modernization project to upgrade the cooling chamber of the continuous casting machine for special steel blooms at its Aosta plant in Italy.
The project aimed to improve caster efficiency while simplifying maintenance and extending the service life of key components. Danieli supplied and installed a new stainless-steel cooling chamber in the caster’s mobile curved zone, covering the wet area exposed to secondary spray cooling.
As part of the revamp, a new central support structure was installed for the caster’s fixed curved sections. The structure incorporates new roller modules, redesigned hoods to improve heat containment and simplify maintenance, and extraction guides for electromagnetic stirrers used across the casting lines.
The modernization also relocated mechanical components outside the wet zone, reducing exposure to water and simplifying maintenance. The support structure for the oscillating benches was also optimized to improve oscillation performance and casting stability.
The entire project was completed during a four-week summer shutdown, allowing the upgraded equipment to be integrated with the existing caster and the plant to return to operation quickly.
Cogne Acciai Speciali is an Italian producer of long stainless steel, nickel alloys and other specialty steels, headquartered in Aosta. It is controlled by Taiwan-based Walsin Lihwa, which acquired a 70pct stake in 2022. Cogne has expanded its international footprint through acquisitions in Europe and operates an integrated production chain covering melting, remelting, casting, rolling, forging and machining. The company has annual production capacity of approximately 220,000 tons of specialty steel products.
