Domestic steel firms urge Indian court to investigate scrap import violations

Three Emirati steel firms have filed a petition with the Bombay High Court in India, alleging illegal imports of steel scrap from the UAE, according to Indian media reports.

Shattaf Steel Ind Co LLC, Emirates Steel LLC, and Arabian Gulf Steel Industries LLC have urged the Indian Customs chief to investigate fraudulent practices linked to these imports. They argue that the issue is causing economic and environmental harm while also undermining the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed between the UAE and India in May 2022.

The firms highlighted that in 2023, the UAE government imposed an export fee of AED 400 (USD 109) per ton on industrial waste, including steel scrap, to address environmental concerns related to waste disposal and recycling. They claim that illegal imports into India bypass environmental regulations, allowing unchecked industrial waste that may not comply with India’s environmental standards.
