Electra unveils Colorado site for low-carbon iron demonstration facility

Electra, a clean iron technology company, has announced the site of its new 130,000-square-foot demonstration facility in Jefferson County, Colorado. Scheduled to begin operations in mid-2026, the plant will produce up to 500 tons of low-carbon, high-purity (99pct) iron annually using Electra’s proprietary low-temperature process powered by clean energy.

The project is supported by a USD 50 mln grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, an USD 8 mln tax credit from the Colorado Industrial Tax Credit Offering (CITCO), and USD 186 mln in Series B funding raised earlier this year.

Electra’s clean iron has already been contracted for delivery to several partners, including Nucor, Toyota Tsusho, and Interfer Edelstahl Group, to qualify the material for steel applications. Nucor will use the product in its EAF-based steelmaking operations, while Toyota Tsusho and Interfer will distribute and apply the material in green and specialty steel markets.

In addition, Meta has made the first purchase of Environmental Attribute Credits (EACs) linked to emissions reductions from Electra’s clean iron production. The agreement supports Meta’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 and provides the option to buy future credits from upcoming commercial facilities.

With strong financial backing and purchase commitments from major industrial and technology partners, Electra is positioned to scale its clean iron production commercially by the end of the decade. The company’s mission is to decarbonize the iron and steel sector, which accounts for nearly 10pct of global CO2 emissions, through a chemical process that converts iron ore into pure iron using clean energy.
