EMSTEEL partners with Magsort to transform steel slag into green cement

EMSTEEL, one of the region’s largest publicly listed steel and building materials manufacturers, has announced a strategic partnership with Finnish company Magsort to advance decarbonised cement production by leveraging steel industry by-products.

The collaboration builds on EMSTEEL’s successful industrial-scale pilot at its Al Ain facility, where 10,000 tons of steel slag were used to produce low-carbon cement. By transforming steel waste into a valuable raw material for clinker and cement, EMSTEEL showcases a unique synergy between its Steel and Cement business units, turning a traditional waste stream into a sustainable resource.

To meet growing demand for low-carbon cement, EMSTEEL will develop a dedicated processing line at its Al Ain plant. This line will treat steel residue and refine by-products sourced from its Abu Dhabi steel operations, directly contributing to a reduction in Scope 1 carbon dioxide emissions.

This effort is a key part of EMSTEEL’s broader decarbonisation roadmap. The company aims to cut absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 40pct in its Steel Business Unit and 30pct in its Cement Business Unit by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline. It remains fully committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

“By turning steel slag into a commercially valuable input for cement, we’re not only cutting emissions but also proving the power of industrial circularity,” said Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL has a production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement annually. The group exports to over 70 markets, accounting for 30pct of its sales. The company offers a diverse range of steel products, including wire rod, rebar, heavy sections, and sheet piles.
