EMSTEEL reappointed as Co-Chair of Alliance for Industry Decarbonization

UAE steel and building materials producer EMSTEEL has been reappointed as Co-Chair of the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID) for a second term.

Led by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), AFID brings together industry, technology and energy companies and knowledge partners to advance practical solutions for industrial decarbonization. EMSTEEL was first appointed Co-Chair in September 2024, succeeding Tata Steel, and will continue in the role alongside German chemicals producer BASF.

The reappointment was announced during New York Climate Week 2026. As Co-Chair, EMSTEEL will support global dialogue on decarbonization pathways and coordination across the industry, energy and finance sectors.

The role supports EMSTEEL’s target of achieving net zero by 2050. The company is pursuing lower-carbon operations through greater use of clean electricity, energy and resource efficiency, green hydrogen, carbon capture, circular economy initiatives and lower-carbon building materials.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL has annual production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement. The group exports to more than 70 markets, which account for around 30pct of total sales, and produces a broad range of steel products including wire rod, rebar, heavy sections and sheet piles.
