UAE-based steel and building materials producer EMSTEEL Group has supplied around 1,100 tons of low-carbon Z-type sheet piles for a new distribution centre for Aldi in the UK.
The material was delivered through Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd for the 950,000 sq ft logistics facility in Bedford, which is expected to create around 750 jobs.
Approximately 550 metres of permanent sheet piling were installed to support early-stage construction, providing ground retention, level management and stability for heavy-duty logistics operations.
The project utilized EMSTEEL’s Z-section low-carbon sheet piles produced via electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, supporting reduced emissions. The piles were designed as free-standing cantilever structures with retained heights exceeding 5 metres and a 75-year design life.
Installation was carried out using vibratory hammer equipment supported by crawler cranes, with pre-augering applied to address variable ground conditions. A continuous 6 mm steel capping channel was welded to the pile heads to ensure structural integrity and finishing.
Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL has an annual production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement. Its steel segment, Emirates Steel, produces wire rod, rebar, heavy sections and sheet piles.
