India’s finished steel production increased 4.7pct YoY to 54.7 mln tons during April-July 2026, according to Ministry of Steel data.
Finished steel consumption rose 7.9pct YoY to 56 mln tons during the period, reflecting stronger domestic demand.
In July, finished steel production increased 3.9pct YoY to 14 mln tons, while consumption rose 6.8pct to 14.4 mln tons.
Finished steel imports also increased during the period, rising 36.6pct YoY to 2.77 mln tons, while exports increased 35pct to 2.29 mln tons. India was therefore a net importer of finished steel during the four-month period.
China was the largest source of imports, accounting for 30.9pct of total volumes, followed by South Korea with 30.2pct and Japan with 14.9pct. Vietnam was the largest destination for Indian finished steel exports, with a 15.4pct share, followed by the UAE at 14.8pct.
