Flux Steel Works has unveiled plans to renovate and re-equip a former ATI steel plant in Ohio to produce grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), the core material used in power transformers.
The company acquired the closed facility in July 2026 and plans to bring more than 200 skilled manufacturing jobs back to the site. The facility was previously operated by ATI Specialty Rolled Products before ATI exited the standard stainless steel and commodity steel businesses and closed the plant in 2021.
The plant is designed to produce more than 260,000 tons per year at full production, with commercial operations targeted for 2029.
Flux has already taken reservations for more than 150,000 tons of GOES. The company is led by a team with nearly a century of combined experience building and operating some of the largest electrical steel production lines in the US.
The project aims to serve growing demand for domestic electrical steel as the US power grid undergoes expansion and replacement of aging infrastructure. GOES is used in transformer cores, with the company highlighting the need for a more secure domestic supply.
Flux Steel Works is an American producer of GOES and is backed by private investment firm Etude Capital.
