Govt has started work on a PKR 12 bln (USD 43.3 mln) project to modernize the Gadani shipbreaking yard, with infrastructure upgrades aimed at bringing the facility in line with international safety and environmental standards.
Physical construction is underway on key facilities, including a 30-bed hospital, labour colony, school and solar power infrastructure, Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said.
The project also includes 32 km of internal roads, a public park, hazardous and industrial waste-treatment systems, fire and rescue stations, and dedicated water treatment facilities.
Implementation has entered the procurement and construction phase, supported by a federal Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) allocation of PKR 780 mln (USD 2.8 mln) for 2026-27, Project Director Saeed Ahmed Umrani said.
The overhaul aims to bring Gadani in line with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships and transform traditional shipbreaking practices into a modern, safe and environmentally responsible ship-recycling industry.
The government said the modernization is also important for Gadani’s role in Pakistan’s steel scrap market and supply chains.
