The Indian government has mandated quality standards for stainless steel seamless pipes and tubes to curb substandard imports, promote domestic manufacturing, and ensure consumer safety. The order issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), will take effect on August 1.
Under the order, these products cannot be produced, sold, traded, imported, or stocked without the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark. However, manufacturers can import up to 500 kg annually for research and development, provided the goods are not sold commercially and are disposed of as scrap.
Violating BIS regulations can lead to imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of at least INR 200,000 (USD 2,302) for the first offense. Repeat offenses carry fines starting at INR 500,000 (USD 5,755), which may rise to 10 times the value of the goods.
