The Brazilian government has extended its steel import quota system for another year to safeguard the domestic industry from unfair competition.
The system, introduced by the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) in 2023, sets quotas on 23 steel products, including hot-rolled and cold-rolled non-alloy steel, coated steel, wire rods, and various tubes and pipes. Imports within the quota are subject to tariffs ranging from 9pct to 16pct, while volumes exceeding the cap face a 25pct duty.
The renewal comes amid growing concerns over a surge in low-cost steel imports, particularly from China. According to Aco Brasil, steel imports rose 27.5pct YoY in the first four months of 2025, reaching 2.2 mln tons.
