HBIS Group’s Wuyang produces first slab from new caster at Wugang plant

HBIS Group’s Wuyang Iron and Steel has successfully produced the first slab on its new single-strand continuous caster at its Wugang facility in Henan province, China. Engineered by Primetals Technologies, the caster is the most powerful of its kind globally and is capable of producing ultra-thick slabs up to 460 millimeters. This enables Wuyang to meet rising demand for advanced steel in sectors such as offshore wind, nuclear power, pressure vessels, and heavy machinery.

By partially replacing traditional ingot casting with this advanced technology, Wuyang aims to reduce operational costs, even when producing complex steel grades.

The caster is equipped with Primetals’ Single Roll DynaGap (SRD) segments, which adjust roll gaps dynamically based on parameters like steel grade and casting speed. Each roll delivers up to 5,000 kilonewtons of force, ensuring refined microstructures and consistent mechanical properties.

Additional innovations include a precision caster-roll geometry setup that reduces bulging by 50pct, boosting casting speed and productivity. The caster also features Smart Segment technology for continuous bending and straightening, along with Eco-Star rolls, internally cooled components that enhance slab surface quality during dry casting.

Wuyang Iron and Steel, a subsidiary of HBIS Group, is one of China’s leading producers of wide and thick steel plates and operates two advanced double-stand production lines, as well as a key industry research center.
