Hoa Phat starts up new slab casting and hot rolling complex

Vietnamese steel producer Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel has successfully commissioned a new slab casting and hot strip mill complex at its Dung Quat steelworks in Quang Ngai province, with technology supplied by Primetals Technologies.

The project includes two slab casters, a 5.5 mln tons per year hot strip mill, advanced automation systems and digital solutions designed to improve product quality, operational efficiency and production flexibility.

Primetals Technologies said both slab casters have been successfully started up and the hot strip mill has received final acceptance. The production line achieved a rapid ramp-up, producing a 1.5 mm low-carbon hot rolled coil just six weeks after start-up.

The two-strand slab casters have a combined capacity of 6 mln tons per year and produce slabs ranging from 900 mm to 1,650 mm in width. The hot strip mill is capable of producing coils weighing up to 36 tons, with thicknesses from 1.2 mm to 25.4 mm.

The facility is equipped with a range of digital and automation technologies, including Through-Process Quality Control (TPQC), production management systems and condition monitoring solutions designed to enhance product quality, optimize logistics and improve equipment reliability.

Hoa Phat Group is one of Vietnam’s leading industrial manufacturers, with steel as its core business. By the end of 2026, its crude steel production capacity is expected to reach 16 mln tons per year, ranking first in Southeast Asia and placing it among the top steelmakers globally.
